Combined Chinese Therapy for Children

There have been lots of studies recently into using acupuncture on babies. Given that the Chinese still prefer to use Traditional Chinese Medicine for their children, despite the fact that they do have access to Western medicine, many researchers are now starting to wonder if the reason why the Chinese continue with TCM is because it might, actually, you know, work.

Well, I know it works. My clients know it works, but many in the West are sceptical hence the sudden upsurge in research and clinical trials.

Here's a roundup of some of the studies

Acupuncture Successfully Treats Colic

A study of 90 otherwise healthy babies with colic, aged from 2 - 8 weeks found that those who were treated twice a week for six weeks with acupuncture, cried for shorter periods and with less intensity than those in the control group.  To make sure that this was a test just of acupuncture and not parents' perceptions, the children were taken from their parents by one nurse and then given to another nurse in another room where they either received acupuncture or did not.

So, that's one positive result for CCT then.

Tuina Cures Eczema

What's this?  A clinical trial pitting tuina against normal medical treatment of eczema in infants?  Yep.  This was a much bigger study involving 240 children.  They were randomly split into two groups, a tuina group and a group that would receive Chlorpheniramine and topical application of zinc oxide ointment.  After three weeks the effects of each treatment were evaluated.

Of the children who had received the tuina massage treatment, 94.2% were cured 'markedly' and 99.2% were cured 'effectively' as opposed to figures of 98% and 100% in the medication group. But, and this is where it gets interesting, six months after treatment only 3.8% of those in the tuina group had a recurrence of their eczema as opposed to almost half, or 42.9% in the medication group.

So tuina not only cures eczema, but it keeps it at bay for longer.

Next time, more reasons why CCT is good for you and me.
